A Day in the life of the One-ery…

Enter the Infant school at Deanbank, climb the stairs and you will notice a gorgeous hand-painted sign decorating the door on the left : The One-ery

Behind it, P1-aged children are not sitting at desks, as they might in a traditional P1 setting. Instead,  they are engrossed in a plenitude of activities designed by staff to enhance the pupils’ learning in a play-based environment, while allowing for their own interests and creativity to shine through.

The children are free to move between the 6 zones in the One-ery, though at various times of the day they come together in small groups for specific target learning to be achieved.   The following photos are just a glimpse of what some of the children chose to experience today.

A remarkably calm room, the sensory zone allows children to experiment with all five senses.

image It’s a busy space to be in – today you could choose between cooking (Banana muffins!) , wood work, bee-bots (early level computer programming) and model making, to name but a few.

…and where there’s a water-table, there’ll be tidying up to do too!
