RSHP (Relationships, Sexual Health & Parenting) Parent information

This PowerPoint explains what we do in a part of our Health and Wellbeing curriculum that we call Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood (RSHP) education.

The Boroughmuir Cluster (Bruntsfield, Buckstone and South Morningside) will be using a new national resource that you can see at https://rshp.scot/  from August 2021.

Our RSHP curriculum has been in place for some years, it is part of Curriculum for Excellence. This is a new resource, designed to help us to deliver the existing RSHP curriculum.

Learning and Teaching

At South Morningside Primary we take account of the children’s individual personality, learning styles and preferences when planning and delivering the curriculum. Teachers endeavour to actively involve children in their learning by discussing what and how they have learned.Children will be taught as part of the whole class, in a group or as an individual, in order that the curriculum can be tailored as far as possible to fit the needs of each child. Discussion, where children plan work and share ideas, is an integral part of the learning process.Teachers use a variety of approaches, from direct interactive teaching to enquiry-based learning and problem solving. From the earliest stages children are encouraged to be independent in their learning, and, as they mature, they are taught to develop effective study skills. Our children may work across stages at times on whole school projects.Learning may be classroom based, outdoor based or may be planned out of school in the local community or on an educational visit. We regularly visit the Royal Scottish Museum, Edinburgh Zoo, Galleries and the Edinburgh Book Festival. Classes also have visitors who come into school, for example, Scottish Opera, the Edinburgh Science Festival, authors and illustrators. We often benefit from funding from the Parent Council to support special visitors and events, but at times we need to charge parents for visits to cover costs. All classrooms have interactive whiteboards. Computers and iPads are timetabled for use by every class each week to develop ICT skills. During Primary 5 the children are offered their first residential experience at Dalguise near Pitlochry for a two night and three day stay. Primary 7 children spend a week at an outdoor residential camp at Lagganlia, near Aviemore, where trained instructors offer experiences such as canoeing, climbing and gorge-walking in a safe and challenging environment.Throughout their school years in South Morningside, children will be involved in various activities and events. We have regular class led assemblies, P1 and P2 Nativity performances and various shows and plays throughout the school year. When possible parents are encouraged to attend and enjoy. Every session we successfully hold Open Classroom events in which the children invite their families into their classrooms to allow them to share their learning.
